Thompson Dazzles, But Offense Stalls Against OSU
2/16/2019 6:11:00 PM | Baseball
Thompson's six innings are a career-high, and he allowed only two runs on four hits. The right-hander also struck out a career-high 10 batters and walked only two.
The Pirate offense mustered only one hit against Buckeye starter Garrett Burhenn, a fifth inning single by sophomore Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.). In all, Burhenn and reliever Andrew Magno pitched to only one batter over the minimum.
What Happened:
Thompson ran into trouble immediately, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first inning, but did a fine job of limiting the damage to just one run. From there, he settled in nicely and kept Ohio State off the scoreboard over the next four innings.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Thompson allowed a solo home run to Brady Cherry to extend Ohio State's lead to 2-0.
The Buckeyes got to Seton Hall's bullpen late, scoring four runs off a trio of Pirate relievers. The big blast was a two-run home run by Ohio State's Noah West in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Buckeyes in front, 6-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- Thompson pitched brilliantly, allowing just two runs on four hits over a career-high six innings pitched. He walked two and struck out a career-high 10 batters. He took the hard-luck loss.
- Huntzinger was the lone Pirate to record a hit on the afternoon. He went 1-for-3 with a single.
- Ohio State out-hit the Pirates, 9-to-1. Seton Hall was errorless and the Buckeyes committed one.
- Ohio State left six men on base, while the Pirates left one.
- Ohio State's Garrett Burhenn picked up the victory. He allowed just hit and no runs over eight innings. He struck out six and didn't walk a batter.
- Seton Hall falls to 4-7 all-time against Ohio State.
- The Pirates have yet to commit an error this season through two games.
- Thompson's 10 strikeouts are the most since Billy Layne, Jr. struck out 11 at Creighton last season (May 5, 2018).
- Junior Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) went 0-for-2 today, which snaps a four-game hit streak dating back to the end of last season.
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it concludes its three-game series in Port Charlotte, Fla. against Ohio State. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
