2/8/2019 6:38:00 PM | Softball
Game 1 – Seton Hall 2, Southern Utah 1
A home run from Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.), a clutch knock from Destini Peck (Riverside, Calif.) and brilliant pitching from Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) and Kelsey Gumm (Spokane, Wash.) helped the Pirates to a season-opening win.
How it Happened
- The Thunderbirds took a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the second
- The Hall would pull even in the top of the fourth with a solo shot from Arteaga
- An inning later, Peck delivered a two-out RBI single to plate Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) and give the Pirates their first lead
- Gumm relieved Camp in the bottom of the fifth with two on and one out, promptly striking out a pair of Thunderbirds to escape the jam
- Gumm would go on the close out the win, retiring the final seven batters she faced
- The Pirates out-hit the Thunderbirds 6-5, while both sides had two errors and left seven runners on
- Arteaga was 2-for-3 with a home run and a double
- Camp finished her day after 4.1 innings pitched, allowing five hits, two walks and a single run while striking out seven
- Gumm struck out five over 2.2 innings to pick up the save in her first career outing
- Alyssa Abron (Sulphur Springs, Texas) had The Hall's lone stolen base on the day
- Pirate pitching combined to hold SUU hitters to a 1-for-9 mark with runners on base
- The contest marked the first-ever meeting between Seton Hall and Southern Utah
Game 2 - UNLV 7, Seton Hall 6
Five different Pirates had two-hit days in a 10-hit effort for The Hall, but three-run frames in the third and fifth innings proved the difference for the hosts.
How it Happened
- Down 1-0 in the bottom of the third, Peck gave the Pirates the lead with a two-run single to left
- The Rebels answered quickly with three runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 4-2
- The Hall would rally again and level the score with RBI singles from Arteaga and Emily Supercynski (Aurora, Colo.) in the top of the fifth
- Once again UNLV was able to respond and re-took the lead with a three-run bottom of the fifth
- The Hall got within a run in the sixth with RBIs from Peck and Arteaga but was unable to pull off a final rally
- The Pirates out-hit the Rebels, 10-7, but committed each of the game's three errors
- Arteaga and Peck each went 2-for-3 and combined to knock in five runs
- Barracato scored three times and doubled
- Beaver and Supercynski also notched multi-hit efforts for the Pirates
- Six different Pirates drew a walk, while SHU pitchers issued only one
