CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. – Three relievers combined for 6.2 innings of scoreless relief, but the Seton Hall baseball team couldn't overcome an early deficit and fell to Virginia, 4-0, in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday.
The shutout is the second of the day. The Pirates blanked Virginia, 3-0, in game one of the doubleheader.
Seton Hall relievers Tyler Burnham (East Brunswick, N.J.), David Festa (Verona, N.J.) and Blake Espinal (Bronx, N.Y.) scattered just three hits over the final 6.2 innings pitched, but Virginia scored four runs over the first two innings.
Offensively, Seton Hall scattered just five hits. Juniors Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) and Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) each reached base three times, walking twice and hitting a single.
What Happened:
Seton Hall starter Cole Patten (Manasquan, N.J.) ran into trouble in the bottom of the first inning, allowing an RBI double to Virginia's Tanner Morris. With runners on the corners and only one out, Patten struck out back-to-back batters to get out of the inning down only one run.
In the top of the second however, Patten issued a leadoff home run to Devin Ortiz, which extended the Cavalier lead to 2-0. With runners on first and second and one out, Burnham entered and got the final two outs, but not before a pair of run-scoring singles put Virginia in front, 4-0.
Inside the Numbers:
Seton Hall will return to action tomorrow when it concludes its three-game series against Virginia in Charlottesville. First pitch is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
