Pirates Drop League Opener To Villanova

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall softball team (9-14, 0-1 BIG EAST) dropped its BIG EAST opener to Villanova (15-13, 1-0 BIG EAST) by a score of 16-0 in five innings on Saturday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.

- The Wildcats jumped ahead with four runs in the top of the first, capitalizing on a pair of SHU errors to score all four runs unearned
- The Hall threatened in the bottom of the second when Katherine Matthys (Spring Branch, Texas) punched a two-out single to right to put a pair of runners on, but both were stranded
- Villanova would put the game out of reach with a huge inning in the top of the fifth, notching a total of 12 runs on eight hits to push the lead to 16-0
- The Hall falls to 36-44 all-time against Villanova with the defeat
- The Wildcats finished with a 10-2 edge in hits, while SHU committed six errors leading to nine unearned runs
- Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) and Matthys both singled for The Hall
- VU only notched one extra base hit, a double in the fifth inning
- Mo Sobel (Newbury Parks, Calif.) was the third pitcher of the day for the Pirates and did not allow a run in an inning of work
