Bats Awaken, But Pitching Slips in Loss at FIU

Collectively, the Seton Hall offense belted out a season-high 12 hits, with Shedler-McAvoy, Clyde and Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) all reaching base three times, but it was the Pirate pitching that faltered tonight. Four of the six Seton Hall pitchers surrendered runs, and Pirate hurlers combined for 10 runs, eight walks, five hit-batsmen and three wild pitches, all season-highs.
Shedler-McAvoy went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Clyde went 2-for-3 with a walk, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs. Del Castillo was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
What Happened:
Seton Hall struck first with a run in the top of the second inning. With one out, Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) reached on an error, and then stole second base. Huntzinger followed with an RBI single down the left field line to put The Hall up, 1-0.
Florida International responded in the bottom half of the inning however, taking advantage of some wildness by freshman starter Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.). Payero ended up allowing two hits, including a two-run home run, two walks and hit a batter in the inning. Freshman Cole Patten (Manasquan, N.J.) entered in relief to get the final two outs, but not before five runs came across to put The Hall in a 5-1 hole.
The Hall got a run back in the top of the third inning when sophomore Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) drove in Shedler-McAvoy, but the Panthers responded with another two-run home run in the bottom of the inning.
Trailing 7-2, Huntzinger knocked in his second run of the game with an RBI single to score Santorelli in the top of the fourth inning to cut FIU's lead back to four runs. In the top of the fifth, The Hall crawled closer. Del Castillo led off with a double, and scored when Dana reached base on an FIU error. After Dana stole second base, junior Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) singled to right field to drive in Dana and cut the deficit in half, 7-5.
In the top of the sixth with two outs, three consecutive singles by Shedler-McAvoy, Del Castillo and Clyde plated The Hall's sixth run. But in the bottom of the seventh inning, FIU struck for three more runs to put the game out of reach.
