Shedler-McAvoy reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with a two-RBI triple, two walks, a sacrifice bunt and two stolen bases. He also threw a runner out at the plate in a strong all-around performance.
On the mound, six Seton Hall pitchers saw action today with only one midweek game and a short turnaround for the approaching weekend series, which begins Thursday. Among those who shined in the bullpen today, freshman Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.) picked up his first collegiate victory with three shutout innings, scattering just two hits. Sophomore Hunter Waldis (Far Hills, N.J.) looked dominant in relief, retiring all four batters he faced, including three strikeouts.
Junior Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to record his fourth save of the season.
What Happened:
Monmouth got to Seton Hall starter Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) early today, striking for a pair of runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. But the Pirates' offense roared to life in the top of the third. With one out, Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) walked, and moved to second on a bunt single by Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.). Shedler-McAvoy followed with a deep triple to the left-center field gap to score both runners and tie the game at two. Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) then dragged a perfect bunt single past the pitcher on the right side to drive in the go-ahead run, 3-2.
In the top of the fourth, Clyde drove in Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) with an RBI single to extend The Hall's lead to 4-2.
Monmouth got a run back off reliever Blake Espinal (Bronx, N.Y.) in the bottom of the sixth, but The Hall extended their lead back to two runs in the top of the seventh. Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) drove in Hood with a hard single to center field.
Seton Hall got its final run on an errant throw by Monmouth's third baseman, which allowed Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) to score in the top of the eighth inning.
