Del Castillo went 3-for-5 with two RBIs to lead the Pirate offense. Both Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) and Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) also had multiple hits. Shedler-McAvoy reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Hood was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.
The Hall got decent pitching from starter Ricky DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y.) and reliever Tyler Burnham (East Brunswick, N.J.). DeVito struggled early, but settled down, allowing three runs in five innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. Burnham was brilliant until late, allowing two runs over 4.2 innings of relief with five strikeouts and two walks.
What Happened:
DeVito ran into trouble early in the contest as Butler struck for single runs in each of the first three innings, taking a 3-0 lead into the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pirates finally got on the scoreboard against Butler's starter Connor Schultz. Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) put down a perfect bunt single, and an errant throw by the Butler third baseman allowed him to get to second. After advancing to third on a balk, Huntzinger scored on an RBI groundout by Del Castillo, cutting the Butler lead to 3-1.
Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Shedler-McAvoy and cut Seton Hall's deficit to one run, 3-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Pirates made it three straight innings with a single run scored. Hood reached first on a dropped third strike to lead off, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Huntzinger and advanced to third on an infield single by Del Castillo. Junior Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) followed with a hard-hit single through the left side to score Hood with the tying run.
Butler finally broke through on Burnham in the top of the 10th inning, scoring a run on a walk, a single, a balk and a wild pitch. The Bulldogs added an insurance run to make the score 5-3 with a two-out double.
The Hall rallied again in the bottom of the 10th inning, but came up just short. Hood doubled to right field to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a one-out single by Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.). Del Castillo singled through the left side, scoring Hood, and cutting the deficit to 5-4. Despite the tying run being just 90 feet away and one out, the Pirates weren't able to get the equalizer.
