The victory ensures a series win over Georgetown. Seton Hall now has tie-breakers with Villanova, Georgetown, Butler and Xavier.
Thompson tossed a gem for the Pirates to improve to 4-2 on the season. The right-hander scattered just four hits over six scoreless innings with six strikeouts and only two walks. Junior Tyler Burnham (East Brunswick, N.J.) pitched the final three innings, and allowed just one run to pick up the save.
Offensively, junior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) continued to shine for the Pirates. The speedster went 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBIs. Freshman Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) had a team-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
What Happened:
Seton Hall struck first with a Shedler-McAvoy generated run in the bottom of the first. The junior had a "hustle-double" with one out to right-center field, and moved to third base on a ground out. He then came in to score on a wild pitch to give The Hall a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Pirates put together a little two-out magic. With two outs and the bases empty, Grober reached on an infield single. After Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) walked, Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove a single up the middle to score Grober with The Hall's second run. Shedler-McAvoy followed with his second double of the game to give The Hall a 4-0 lead. He was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple, but both runners had already scored.
The Hall added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) doubled home Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.), again with two outs.
Georgetown's Kyle Ruedisili led off the eighth inning with a solo home run to account for the Hoyas' lone run.
