The win gives The Hall an impressive road series victory over the BIG EAST's top team and gets its overall record to .500 on the season for the first time. It's Seton Hall's fifth straight win, which matches its longest win streak of the season.
Shedler-McAvoy went 3-for-5 with a home run, a triple, a double a run scored and three RBIs. Both Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) and Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) each had two hits. Both Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) reached base three times and had two walks apiece.
On the mound, starter Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas) allowed only two runs over six strong innings. He struck out six and walked two in a no decision. Sophomore Hunter Waldis (Far Hills, N.J.) continued his strong recent play, tossing two scoreless innings and picking up the victory. Junior Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) struck out the side in a perfect ninth.
What Happened:
Thompson pitched well for Seton Hall, but allowed a single run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly, and a single run in the bottom of the fourth when he balked with a runner on third.
In the top of the fifth inning, The Hall's offense came roaring awake. After Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on an error by the Xavier shortstop, Shedler-McAvoy tied the game with a two-run home run over the left field fence. Del Castillo followed with a triple to center field, and scored on a wild pitch to give The Hall a 3-2 lead.
After Xavier tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, Seton Hall broke the game open in the top of the eighth, scoring five times on four hits, all with two outs. With runners on first and second, Grober hit the first of three straight doubles. Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Huntzinger each drove in runs with doubles of their own, and Shedler-McAvoy capped the extra-base train with a triple to put The Hall up, 8-3.
In the top of the ninth, Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) provided the icing on the cake with a three-run home run.
