West Point, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's tennis team commenced its 2019-20 season this past weekend at the West Point Invitational against some strong competition with some encouraging results. Senior Melody Taal (Ede, Netherlands) and sophomore Regina Pitts (Los Angeles, Calif.) advanced the furthest in singles competition, each reaching the quarterfinals of the A singles level.Â
Taal was a straight-sets winner in both her first-round match against Fairleigh Dickinson's Shreya Gulia and her second-round match against Drexel's Ghita Benhadi. She lost her quarterfinal match to sixth-seeded Sydney Jones of Rutgers. Pitts also cruised to straight-set victories over Stephanie Dolehide of Army West Point in the first round and fifth-seeded Alena Kubanova of Fairleigh Dickinson in the second round. She fell to Syracuse's Sofya Trescheva in the quarters.
Elsewhere, seniors Minja Gligic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Mekeila Erpsamer (Long Beach, Calif.) and freshmen Aina Plana Ventosa (Barcelona, Spain) and Hiba El Khalifi (Morocco) competed in B singles but did not advance in the championship bracket. Gligic did win a B singles consolation round against Katka Majorova of Drexel. Senior Michal Matson (Christchurch, New Zealand) competed in C singles and rebounded from a first-round loss to reach the C Singles Consolation semifinals. In E singles, senior Anniek Jansen (Naarden, Netherlands) won her first round match.
