Sawyer Named To NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch List

The senior registered a 1.73 ERA last season for the Pirates
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Senior pitcher Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) has been named to the initial Watch List for the 16th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball, the association announced Monday.
Sawyer made all 24 of his appearances in relief for the Pirates last season as he registered a 1-1 record with a 1.73 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 26.0 innings pitched. The lefty led the Pirates with four saves and he ranked second in the BIG EAST with 19 games finished.
The NCBWA, founded in 1962, presents the Dick Howser Trophy to the nation's top player and the Mike Martin National Coach of the Year to the nation's top coach. It also selects All-America Teams for all Divisions, a Division I Freshman All-American team, Division I, II and III Players of the Week and Division I, II and III Players of the Year.
Sawyer and the Pirates kick off the season this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C., as they take on No. 20 Wake Forest on Friday followed by games against Illinois and Milwaukee on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
