Pirate offense pushes across eight runs in the loss to the Colonials
ARLINGTON, Va. – Sophomore outfielder Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) went 3-for-3 with a walk Friday afternoon scoring two runs while senior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) recorded four RBI on two hits including a three-run homer in the fourth inning but the Seton Hall baseball team was unable to earn a win in its first of three games against George Washington, 13-8.
Junior Blaise Panzini (Spring Lake, N.J.) recorded his second appearance on the mound for Seton Hall, throwing two complete innings and allowing no earned runs with one strikeout.
The Colonials struck first in the game's opening inning, but senior third baseman Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) would respond with a solo home run in the bottom of the frame, his second on the season.
A three-run double followed up by an RBI single in the second inning would allow for a 5-1 George Washington lead, however the Pirates would again have an answer in the ensuing half as senior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded his fifth RBI of 2021, scoring Hack from third base on a soft grounder off an attempted check-swing.
By the fifth inning, the Pirates found themselves down seven runs, but Shedler-McAvoy's booming home run – his first of the season – over the left-center field fence jolted Seton Hall back into the game. In the seventh inning Dana pounded a double off the center field wall scoring freshman Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.), and was followed up by another Shedler-McAvoy RBI, this time via a sacrifice fly plating fellow graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.).
An unearned Colonial run in the seventh inning and two more scores in the eighth put the Pirates too far out of reach. A final score of 13-8 pushes The Hall down to a season record of 3-8, but the season still has much life.
