Ramachandran Fuels Pirates in Round One at Craft Farms
3/28/2021 4:42:00 PM | Men's Golf
GULF SHORES, ALA. – Junior Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) hit a 1-over-par, 73, to lead the Seton Hall men's golf team after round one of the Craft Farms Intercollegiate at Craft Farms Golf Resort on Sunday.
Â
Ramachandran had four birdies and 10 pars to fuel his strong opening round. Currently, he's tied for 18th place among 75 individual golfers. Illinois State's David Perkins currently leads the individual field at 5-under-par.
Â
Collectively, Seton Hall is in 11th place among a very competitive field. The Pirates shot an 18-over-par, 306, in the opening round and trails the team leaders, Louisiana, by 22 strokes entering Monday's second round. Due to COVID-19 contact tracing, the Pirates are forced to play with only four golfers for the tournament, so the scores of all four golfers per round will count.
Â
Alex McAuley (Douglas, Isle of Man) was the second-best Pirate competitor on Sunday. He had eight pars in his first nine holes, but struggled a bit on the back nine, finishing with a 5-over-par, 77.
Â
Both senior Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Brody Hanley (Lantana, Texas) shot a 6-over-par, 78. Like McAuley, Acevedo was only 1-over-par through nine holes, but suffered a pair of double-bogeys on his back nine. Hanley was only 2-over through his first nine. He had two birdies on his back nine, but also had five holes of a bogey or worse.

THE COURSE:
Featuring rolling fairways and large undulating greens, Cotton Creek at Craft Farms Golf Resort is very playable from the forward tees and a true championship challenge of over 7,000 yards from the tips. True to its Palmer design, this traditional 18-hole masterpiece was laid out to challenge rather than intimidate, with numerous risk/reward opportunities throughout.
Â
Golf Digest has consistently rated Cotton Creek as one of the Best Places to Play! This 4-star course, located in Gulf Shores, Alabama, features tree-lined, rolling fairways surrounded by lakes. The lush course is challenging for low handicap players but with five staggered tee boxes, it is a fun challenge for golfers at any level.
Â
Considering a risky shot to go for the green? Your bravery will be rewarded with the large undulating greens. The 6th Hole is the most challenging on Cotton Creek. With a well-placed tee shot over water to the fairway, the 2nd shot also requires a smart swing over more water to the green. A birdie on this hole delights anyone who rises to meet its challenge!
Â
THE FIELD:
In addition to Seton Hall and hosts South Alabama and Eastern Michigan, the field features 10 other teams including: Ball State, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois State, Lamar, Lipscomb, Louisiana, Southern Illinois, Texas State and Western Kentucky.
