NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Naomi Welch (Livingston, Scotland) scored twice and Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) made four saves as the Seton Hall women's soccer team shut out NJIT, 2-0, Thursday to improve to 2-0 on the young season.

Welch broke a scoreless tie in the 54^th minute, taking advantage of an NJIT turnover for a breakaway and beating Highlander goalkeeper Molly Saylor in the bottom left corner. The Pirates controlled play in the second half recording six of the game's seven shots on goal in the second stanza. Welch put the game away late when she tapped in her third goal of the season off a perfect cross pass by freshman Sophie Liston (Newcastle West, Ireland) in the 86^th minute.

The first half was relatively evenly played with both teams putting three shots on goal. Among Gordon's three saves was a spectacular full-extension glove stop of a shot in the box by NJIT's Caroline Caputo in the 22^nd minute.

NEWS & NOTES:

Seton Hall has opened the season with two straight wins for the first time since the start of the 2012 season. That year, the Pirates started 5-0.
Welch now has four career goals at Seton Hall and has scored in both of the season's first two contests.
The game time temperature was 93 degrees, and as a result, the teams got regular hydration breaks throughout the contest.
Gordon collected her second career shutout and registered four saves.
Seton Hall put more shots on goal, 9-to-4, but NJIT had more shots overall, 13-to-11.
NJIT had six corner kicks, compared to just one for the Pirates.
Seton Hall committed 11 fouls, while NJIT had nine.
