Bronx, N.Y. – The Pirates dropped a midweek road matchup with Fordham, 3-2 in overtime, on Tuesday night. Johannes Pex (Stephansposching, Germany) converted two penalty kicks for the Pirates just over a minute apart in the setback. The Pirates now sit at 4-3-2 on the season.
How it Happened
Just eight minutes into the match, Florian Deletioglu received a pass from Max Rogers outside the Pirate penalty area. Deletioglu struck a long shot past the outstretched dive of Andreas Nota and into the net for the first goal of the match.
Fifteen minutes later, the combination of Rogers to Deletioglu struck again. This time Rogers ricocheted a shot off the crossbar and back into play where Deletioglu was able to get his foot on it and double the Fordham lead. The Rams were able to converted both of their shots on net to enter the break with a 2-0 lead.
Trailing in the 60th minute, Andrea Borg (Sliema, Malta) fired off a shot that struck a Fordham defender in the arm for a handball in the penalty area, awarding the Pirates a penalty kick. For the second time this season, Pex stepped up to bury the PK and cut the Fordham lead in half. A mere 62 seconds later, the Pirates were again able to draw a penalty in the Ram box and again Pex delivered for The Hall from the penalty spot. For Pex, it was his team-leading fourth and fifth tallies of the season.
Turning Point
With the score even at two after 90 minutes of play, the match headed into overtime. Just under four minutes into the first extra period, Matt Sloan crossed a deep ball into the Pirate box where Rogers was able to get his foot on it and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
