
O'Brien Fueling Pirates After Two Rounds at The Big Texan

The Pirates are tied for third and trail the team leaders by only four strokes with 18 holes left.
KERRVILLE, TEXAS – Freshman Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) is 4-under-par through two rounds and has powered the Seton Hall men's golf team to a third-place standing with 18 holes remaining of The Big Texan.

O'Brien has been consistent through two rounds, firing a pair of 2-under-par, 70, scores. In round one, he had five birdies and 10 pars, while in round two, he had two birdies and an eagle on the par-5, No. 18 hole. O'Brien is currently tied for fourth place among 65 individual golfers with a 4-under-par, 70-70-140, and trails Incarnate Word's Joe Buenfield by four strokes entering Tuesday's final round.

As a team, the Pirates are very much in contention for a second-straight team title, only four strokes behind the team leader, New Orleans, with 18 holes left to play. The Hall is tied for third with a stellar 1-over-par, 290-287-577. New Orleans is 3-under-par, while Southeastern Louisiana is second at 2-under-par.

Junior Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) shot a 2-over-par, 74, in round one, but shaved four strokes off in round two. In the afternoon, he had three birdies and an eagle on the par-5, No. 13 hole. Xie is currently tied for 10th overall with an even-par, 74-70-144.

Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) also had a big rebound in the afternoon. In round one, he shot a 4-over-par, 76, but in the afternoon, the grad student shaved five strokes off her score to finish with a 1-under-par, 71. Acevedo bogeyed his first two holes, but had three birdies and 13 pars the rest of the way. He's currently tied for 24th place with a 3-over-par, 76-71-147.

Sophomore Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) had five birdies and an eagle on the par-5, No. 13 hole in round one to fuel a 1-over-par, 73. In round two, he had four more birdies, but slipped to a 4-over-par, 76. Through two rounds, Sun is tied for 32nd place with a 5-over-par, 73-76-149.

Only one stroke behind Sun is graduate student Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England). He had four birdies on his way to a 1-over-par, 73, in round one. Tait shot a 5-over-par, 77, in round two. For the tournament, he is 6-over-par with a 73-77-150.

Tom Kite, along with Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell, designed the first 18, The Valley and The Hills, utilizing the exquisite Hill Country terrain, which is blessed with majestic oaks. Lakes and streams were also incorporated along with the best bent grass greens in the state. Jay and Carter Morrish designed a series of streams and lakes that meander around the third 9, The Creeks, which opened in July of 2008.Comanche Trace is somewhat unique because they are not dense with trees, but they have marquis trees throughout. The fairways are generous and playable with striking bunkers and outstanding views on each green.

Comanche Trace offers beautiful golf holes, natural contouring and pristine conditions. The greens are a blend of Bent Grass, Crenshaw and L93 bent grass, which, combined with remarkable drainage and dry air, have no need for fans. Comanche Trace course conditions are renowned among golfers as the best in the state and some of the best in the nation.

All three nines begin from the high point of the 15-acre Practice Facility, located at the Honor House. The Practice Facility includes a short-game area at the lower end with two, large tee boxes, practice green, fairway type bunker, greenside bunker, and five target greens inside of 120 yards. It is a pristine setting with long-range views and beautiful, old live oak trees for shading around the practice area.

In addition to Seton Hall and host Texas-Rio Grande Valley, the field features 11 other teams including: Houston Baptist, Incarnate Word, Lehigh, Midland College, New Orleans, Northern Colorado, Odessa College, Stephen F. Austin, Southeastern Louisiana, Texas Southern and UT-Arlington.

The field will play two rounds on Monday and one round on Tuesday. Monday's play will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., while Tuesday's final round will have a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
