Smith Named BIG EAST Player of the Week

NEW YORK – Following a great weekend both in the circle and at the plate, Seton Hall softball's Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) was named BIG EAST Player of the Week as the Pirates took two-of-three from Creighton in a series victory. The junior went 5-for-8 (.625) at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs while also tossing 16.1 innings with 15 strikeouts, a win and a save over the three games with the Bluejays.
In the Pirates' first win of the series on Saturday, Smith went 2-for-2 at the plate with a solo home run and a walk while tossing a complete-game victory with five strikeouts in the circle. Smith picked up right where she left off in game two of the day, going 2-for-3 at the dish with a two-run home run and coming in to pick up the final out in the circle for the save. Smith also picked up an RBI-single while tossing all nine innings with nine punchouts in the series finale on Sunday.
At the dish, Smith leads all qualified Pirates' batter in average, slugging and on-base percentage (.340/.717/.419) while also pacing the Pirates RBIs (18) and home runs (6). In BIG EAST-play alone, Smith is hitting .471 with three home runs and eight RBIs in six games with a .571 OBP and 1.000 slugging. In the circle, Smith has racked up a team-leading 58 strikeouts through 70.1 innings with a 3.18 ERA. This is Smith's first time being honored as the conference's player of the week and third time on the conference's weekly honor list.
Seton Hall will be back in action this week as they host a doubleheader with Monmouth on Wednesday before heading to Indianapolis for a three-game series with Butler on Friday.
