South Orange, N.J. — Graduate student Collin Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.) delivered the game-winning double in the 10th inning that propelled the Seton Hall baseball team to its third consecutive victory as the Pirates defeated Monmouth, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore Drew Conover (Pittstown, N.J.) earned the win for the Pirates after tossing two innings of scoreless relief. Freshman Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) had a two RBI base hit and redshirt sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went 2-for-5 and stole a career-high three bases.
How It Happened
The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run but Payero settled in and worked a scoreless second and third innings.
In the bottom of the third, Gale tallied the first Seton Hall hit of the day on a single to left field. After Gale stole second, Hack drew a walk to give the Pirates two runners on base. The duo pulled off a double steal that moved them both into scoring position and D'Amico delivered with a single to center field that tied up the game at 2-2.
Monmouth regained the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single that gave the Hawks a 3-2 advantage. Payero and reliever Chris Shine (South Plainfield, N.J.) combined to retire the side in the fifth and sixth innings and kept the Monmouth offense quiet. Sheehan reached on a one out base hit in the home half of the sixth and head coach Rob Sheppard called for junior Jonathan Luders to come off the bench as a pinch hitter. Luders delivered as he sent a 1-1 pitch to the left field wall and Sheehan scored all the way from the first, tying the game up at 3-3.
The bullpens on both sides did their jobs in the latter innings. For the Pirates, sophomore Zane Probst (Mill Hall, Pa.) worked a scoreless eighth and classmate Conover worked out of a jam in the top of the ninth and kept it a 3-3 ballgame. Conover allowed a lead-off walk in the top of the 10th but he helped his own cause by turning a 1-6-3 double play for the first two outs before getting the third out on a called strike three.
In the bottom of the 10th, The Hall was down to its last out when Sylvester and D'Amico worked back-to-back walks to give the Pirates runners on first and second. Sheehan then stepped to the plate and sliced a 2-1 pitch deep into the left center field gap that allowed Sylvester to score the game-winning run with ease from second base.
