3/7/2022 8:08:00 PM | Men's Golf
Acevedo and Xie were tied for seventh place among 108 golfers before darkness halted play in round two.
PINEHURST, N.C. – Graduate student Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) shot a 1-under-par, 71, in the opening round and currently has the Seton Hall men's golf team unofficially only one stroke off the team lead at the Ross Collegiate Classic.
Â
Acevedo used five birdies to power his first-round effort. He was 1-over-par through 16 holes before darkness halted the second round. Acevedo is currently tied for seventh place among 108 individual golfers at even-par.
Â
As a team, the Pirates are only one shot off the pace in a large field of 17 teams through nearly two rounds complete. The Hall shot a 10-over-par, 298, in round one, and were in fifth place after 18 holes. When darkness fell in round two, the Pirates had the top second-round score at 1-under-par. Elon is currently the team leader through nearly two rounds.
Â
Three other BIG EAST schools are also in the field. Connecticut is currently in fourth place, six strokes behind The Hall. Villanova is tied for fifth, seven strokes behind, and St. John's is 12th and 15 strokes back of the Pirates.
Â
Junior Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) is currently tied with Acevedo as the top Pirates in the field. He shot a 3-over-par, 75, in round one, but is currently 3-under-par through 13 holes in round two.
Â
Senior Deven Ramachandran (San Rafael, Calif.) shot a 6-over-par, 78, in round one, but is currently having a stellar second round. Through 15 holes, he's 1-under-par with four birdies. Ramachandran is currently tied for 27th overall at 5-over-par for the tournament.
Â
Freshman Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) shot a 5-over-par, 77, in round one, and is 2-over-par through 16 holes in round two. O'Brien is currently tied for 40th place and 7-over-par for the tournament.
Â
Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) had an eagle on the par-5, No. 5 hole in round one in route to a 3-over-par, 75. Through 16 holes in round two, he's 6-over-par. Tait is currently tied for 55th at 9-over-par overall.
Â
Seton Hall also sent two additional golfers to the tournament to compete as individuals. Sophomore Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) shot a 3-over-par, 75, in round one. Through 10 holes in round two, he's 1-over-par. Currently, Sun is tied for 23rd overall at 4-over-par.Â
Â
Sophomore Brody Hanley (Lantana, Texas) shot a 5-over-par, 77, in round one, and is currently 4-over-par through 10 holes in round two. He's in 55th place at 9-over-par for the tournament.

THE CAUSE
During this tournament the Pirates will all be wearing "Leuk the Duck" pins on their hats to support "Challenge," an auspice program of the Australian Red Cross. Started in 1983, and for over 30 years, Challenge has supported children and families living with cancer. A major ambassador for the program was Australian professional golfer Jarrod Lyle, who tragically passed away after a long battle with Leukemia in 2018.
Â
A passionate supporter of "Challenge" is Seton Hall freshman Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia), who brought awareness of the program to the Pirates.
Â
THE COURSE
A rarity among Donald Ross masterpieces, Mid Pines Golf Course remains exactly as the world-renowned architect built it in 1921 and impeccably restored by Kyle Franz in 2013. The renovation was honored with GOLF Magazine's Best U.S. Resort Renovation and Restoration of the Year. The course, often characterized as "pure Donald Ross," was designed to fit perfectly into the natural landscape, as was Ross's signature approach.
Â
Mid Pines was not intended to be a daunting challenge for the finest players competing under championship conditions, but was envisioned as a course that would offer friendly competition for members and guests of a private club and resort. However, fanatics and pros have taken note of the perfectly preserved course and Mid Pines has become a classic gem, which has now played host to many national competitions including the 2002 USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.
Â
