South Orange, N.J. — In an up-and-down affair for both sides, the Seton Hall baseball team was able to win it in the bottom of the ninth inning on a base loaded walk as the Pirates defeated Saint Peter's, 3-2, in midweek action at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Sophomore Michael Ciminiello (Saint James, N.Y.) earned his first win of the season for The Hall after tossing two nearly flawless innings out of the bullpen. Senior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) went 2-for-4 with a triple and delivered defensively with an outstanding diving catch in foul territory in the top of the ninth.
Junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) continued his strong play as he reached base in three of his five plate appearances, including a triple.
How It Happened
Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning where Hack stood on third and went home on a groundout off the bat of sophomore Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.).
The Peacocks put runners on in each of the first of the first three innings but the Pirates avoided trouble each time. In relief, freshman Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) worked around a two-out walk in the fourth inning, thanks to graduate student Collin Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.) throwing a runner out at second base to end the inning, and retired the side in order in the fifth.
The pitching staff would run into trouble in the sixth as Saint Peter's took advantage of a throwing error to tie the game up at 1-1 and scored the go-ahead run on a bases loaded walk that made it 2-1. Sophomore Drew Conover (Pittstown, N.J.) struck out the final batter of the inning in the sixth and worked around a lead off runner in the seventh by recording two punch outs.
In the home half of the seventh, senior Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) came off the bench as a pinch hitter and delivered with a lead-off double. After Clyde moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, he scored easily on a triple by Hack that went into the right field corner, tying the game up at 2-2.
Ciminiello entered the game in the top of the eighth and made quick work of the Peacocks. He received some help from his defense in the top of the ninth where the first out was recorded on a spectacular grab by Grober who dove into the Seton Hall bullpen and came up with the ball. Ciminiello would allow a double to the next batter but he settled in and retired the next two batters by way of the K.
Wind and rain picked up in the bottom of the ninth as the Pirates started off the frame with back-to-back walks. Junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) dropped a brilliant bunt that went up the third base line and it loaded the bases for senior David Haberman (Morristown, N.J.). On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Haberman wisely looked at ball four and the winning run came in to score.
Up Next
The Pirates will have a quick turnaround as they will travel to Trenton to take on Wagner at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
