Caye and Blevins Have Strong Days in The Hall's Loss to Drexel

South Orange, N.J. - Freshmen Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) combined to go 3-for-4 with three walks and two RBI, but the Seton Hall softball team suffered a midweek 7-2 loss to Drexel Wednesday at Essex County Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.

Caye reached base in all four of her plate appearances on the day, scoring the team's first run, and Blevins drove in both Seton Hall runs on the day with a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.

How It Happened

Drexel jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, and the Pirates responded by taking advantage of Drexel's control issues. Caye singled up the middle to get it going, junior Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) was hit by a pitch and back-to-back walks by junior Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) and Blevins forced in Caye to score and make it a 2-1 game.

However, the Pirates got into trouble in the fourth inning when the Dragons had the first three batters reach to load the bases. With one out, and on an 0-2 pitch, Savanaah Garcia drove a pitch to right center for a two-run double. Then Sarah Clinton broke the game open with a three-run home run to nearly the same spot.

Numbers & Notes

Seton Hall had seven hits and drew five walks, but left 10 runners on base.
Blevins has now driven in a run in three of her last five games played.
The four times reached base is a career high for Caye.
Smith started in the circle and allowed seven runs on seven hits. She did not walk a batter, extending her consecutive innings pitched without issuing a free pass to 20-1/3 innings. Her consecutive complete games pitched streak came to an end at nine.
This was the first time Seton Hall and Drexel had met since 2016 and the first time in South Orange since 2015. The Dragons now lead the all-time series 9-8.
