Clinton, S.C. – Stellar offense and dominant pitching was the story for the Pirates on Friday afternoon as they defeated IUPUI, 6-0, for their first win of the young season. Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) hit a pair of home runs while Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) and Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) combined for a two-hit shutout.
How it Happened
The Pirates will play a pair of games on Saturday, starting with a matchup with Appalachian State at 12:15 p.m., followed by a showdown with Presbyterian at 2:30 p.m.
How it Happened
- After stranding the bases loaded in the first inning, the Pirates were determined to push runs across in the second. With two runners on, Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) singled to left field to score Jessica Muniz (Garden Grove, Calif.) with the game's first run. Later in the inning, Carr gave herself some run support with a sacrifice fly to score Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) to make it a 2-0 Pirates lead.
- Smith led off the bottom of the third inning with a home run, the first of the season for the Pirates. Hill would follow suit with a long ball of her own in the fourth inning.
- Smith came on in relief for Carr to start the fifth inning, and promptly set down the first six hitters she faced over her first two innings of work.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Hill stepped to the plate and launched her second home run of the day to push the lead to 6-0.
- Smith worked out of trouble to close the game out in the seventh. Facing a bases loaded, one-out situation, the senior registered a strikeout and a lineout to end the ballgame.
- The Pirates have allowed just three total runs through the first three games of a season for the first time since 2003.
- Carr has begun her season with 12 scoreless innings pitched, allowing just three hits and striking out 14.
- This was Hill's first career multi-home run game. The last Pirate to have a multi-home run game was Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Smith, who each did so against Saint Joseph's on February 20, 2022.
- The Pirates hit three home runs in a game as a team for the first time since March 4, 2022 against Nevada.
