Pirates Edged by Monmouth in Home Opener, 2-1

Â
Four Pirates' pitchers combined to allow just two runs, but Monmouth's Ben Winstead had a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning which provided the difference.
Â
The Hall's pitching was stellar with starter Christopher Shine (South Plainfield, N.J.) going 3.1 innings and allowing just one run on three hits. Graduate student Joe Cinnella (Mahwah, N.J.) had nearly the same stat line, but struck out five and walked only one. Freshman Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.J.) added 1.1 innings of scoreless relief and junior Jay Allmer (Raleigh, N.C.) finished with a shutout inning.
Â
How It Happened:
Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning when Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) singled with one out and was driven in by a two-out RBI double down the left field line from Jack Wentworth (Wakefield, R.I.). The lead was short-lived, however, as Monmouth struck with a two-out RBI double in the top of the third.
Â
In the sixth, Monmouth put runners on second and third with only one out. Cinnella got the second out via strikeout, but Winstead followed with a two-out single up the middle to plate the go-ahead run.
Â
With one out in the eighth inning, Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) doubled to right-centerfield. Clyde followed with a single up the middle, but Hernandez, representing the tying run, was thrown out at the plate. Two walks loaded the bases for the Pirates, but alas, they left all three runners on base. The Hall started a two-out rally in the ninth as well, getting the tying run into scoring position, but it was ultimately stranded.

Numbers & Notes:

- Neither team committed an error. It was the third time this season that The Hall didn't commit an error.
- Cinnella took the hard-luck loss despite throwing 3.1 innings of relief and allowing just one run on three hits. He also struck out five batters and walked only one.
- D'Amico went 4-for-5, a season-best for hits.
- Shine had one of his best outings of the year, allowing just one run on three hits in 3.1 innings pitched.
- Hernandez went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
- Gillen tossed 1.1 scoreless innings today and has now thrown 5.1 scoreless innings to begin his career.
- Clyde reached base three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
- Allmer pitched a scoreless ninth inning. He's now kept opponents off the scoreboard in three of his five appearances this year.
Seton Hall will return to action with a three-game series against Holy Cross this weekend at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium. The teams will play a double-header on Saturday with game one beginning at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's contest will begin at Noon. All three games will be streamed live by the Pirate Sports Network and available for FloSports subscribers.
