Riverside, Calif. - Sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass) had an RBI single for his team-leading ninth RBI of the season and the Seton Hall pitching staff allowed only three earned runs but the Pirates couldn't break through offensively in a 4-3 loss to Cal Baptist on Saturday evening.
Sophomore Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts in his third start of the season. Freshman Ryan Reich (Sellinsgrove, Pa.) struck out a pair of batters in relief and junior Jay Allmer (Asheville, N.C.) posted three Ks in two innings of work.
How It Happened
Junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) led off the top of the third with a double to left center and moved to third with one out on a passed ball. With two down, D'Amico turned on a 1-2 pitch down the left field line and it brought McNelly home, giving Seton Hall a 1-0 lead. Frontera worked a scoreless third and recorded a strikeout for the first out of the fourth before allowing a solo home run that knotted up the score at 1-1.
The Lancers pushed two more runs across in the fifth on a two-run home run but Reich worked a scoreless sixth and the Pirate bats got something going in the top of the seventh. Consecutive singles by junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) and graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.), the latter on a bunt single, got the inning started. Freshman Nick Ferri (Flemington, N.J.) was the next batter and he put the ball in play, forcing the pitcher to field a grounder and the throw the ball wide and allowing Hack to score from second. Following a pitching change, Seton Hall had runners on the corners for McNelly who chopped a ground ball in the infield and reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Hack to score from the third and tie the game up at 3-3.
With Allmer on the mound, Cal Baptist got the inning started with consecutive base hits and both moved up on a passed ball. An infield single served as the go-ahead run but Almer settled in registered two strikeouts to end the inning. Seton Hall threatened in the top of the eighth where junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) reached on a one-out double and Hack was hit by a pitch but a fielder's choice ended the final threat of the game.
