Riverside, Calif. - Juniors Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) and Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) combined for four hits and three RBI and redshirt junior Chris Shine (South Plainfield, N.J.) finished with five strikeouts in three innings but the Seton Hall baseball team couldn't take the series finale against California Baptist as the Lancers defeated the Pirates, 8-4, on Wednesday evening.
Shine allowed only one run and one hit in three innings of work for the Pirates (4-6).
How It Happened
In the top of the first inning, sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) reached on a two-out double and moved to third on a wild pitch but was left stranded. After a rocky first inning where the Lancers scored the game's first run to go up 1-0, Shine settled in and struck out the side in the second before retiring the side in order in the third.
The Pirates answered in the top of the second inning where Sylvester ripped a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for his second home run of the season. With the score knotted up at 1-1 still in the top of the fourth, D'Amico walked to lead off the inning the he was driven in by Viera on a double down the left field line, giving Seton Hall a 2-1 lead. Viera stood on third base with two outs later on in the inning and he jetted home on a wild pitch that extended the Pirates' lead to 3-1.
California Baptist countered in the home half of the fourth with two runs of their, tying things up at 3-3. Junior Richie Cimpric (Bayport, N.Y.) and graduate student Dom DiRado (Vestal, N.Y.) did their jobs in relief by keeping the Lancers off the board. The Hall was in position to do damage in the top of the seventh where they had runners on the corners with no one out and the bases loaded with one down but it couldn't plate a run. After Cal Baptist posted a crooked number in the bottom of the seventh that gave it a 7-3 lead, the Pirates got a run back in the eighth thanks to another RBI double from Viera but it wouldn't be enough as the Lancers went away with an 8-4 win.
