Lawrenceville, N.J. - The pitching staff for the Seton Hall baseball team combined to allow only one run, sparking a 3-1 victory over Rider on Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman starter Anthony Ehly (Glenside, Pa.) went 3.1 innings and tallied a strikeout with no walks before graduate student Alex Nicolosi (Stony Point, N.Y.), who earned the win, retired all six batters he faced on 22 pitches. Freshmen Ryan Reich (Sellinsgrove, Pa.) and Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.J.) kept the Broncs off the board over 2.2 innings of work and junior Jay Allmer (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up two strikeouts in the ninth inning en route to his fifth save of the season.
Offensively, junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored and junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) had an RBI double.
THE GAME:
Both sides were scoreless through three innings before the Pirates struck in the visiting half of the fourth. Redshirt junior Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led off with an infield single to third base, stole second base and later moved to third on a groundout. Junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) drove him in on a sacrifice fly, giving Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.
Rider responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to tie the score at 1-1 but the Pirates countered in the fifth. Hack got on with a single and swiped second before moving to third on an errant throw by the catcher. With runners on the corners and no one out, sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) dropped a perfect bunt up the first base line that plated Hack and gave The Hall the lead again, 2-1. Later, an RBI double by Luders drove in Sophomore Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.).
The bullpen continued to do its job as Nicolosi and Reich combined to tackle the sixth. Reich would then work a 1-2-3 seventh and Gillen snuck out of trouble in the eighth to keep it a 3-1 game. Despite two errors on the Pirates in the ninth, Allmer used two strikeouts to bookend his fifth save of the season.
