Pirates' 10-Run Comeback Highlights Doubleheader Sweep over Rider

South Orange, N.J. – The Pirates picked up a doubleheader sweep in dramatic fashion on Wednesday at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field. In game one, The Hall rallied back from a 10-0 deficit to win game one, 11-10, while Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) tossed a complete game and allowed just one run in the 3-1 win in game two.

How it Happened

Rider got to the Pirates early, holding a 6-0 lead after two innings of play. After adding another tally in the seventh, a three-run shot by Olivia Burroughs in the top of the fifth gave the Broncs a 10-0 advantage.
Facing the threat of a run rule defeat, the Pirates' bats went to work, scoring five in the bottom of the fifth. Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) knocked home the first run for the Pirates with a single to left center, followed by a Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) three-run home run to make it a 10-4 game. Next, Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) would triple off the left field wall and would score on a sacrifice fly by Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.).
Four more Pirates crossed the plate in the sixth. After an Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) single with one out, Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) would knock a double into left field to make it a 10-6 game. Two batters later, Carr would hit her second home run in as many innings which brought it to a 10-8 score.
With the Pirates now down by just two, Wingo singled with two outs to maintain the pressure on Rider. Gilbert would then be hit by a pitch, and back-to-back walks to Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) and Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) brought home a run to make it 10-9.
The Hall entered the seventh down by a run and looking to complete the comeback. With one out, back-to-back errors put runners at first and second. After Carr drew a walk to load the bases, Wingo laced a double to the center field wall to walk it off and complete the comeback victory.

Notes & Numbers

Each of the top five batters in the Pirates order had multiple base hits, including Wingo with a 3-for-5 day. The top five batters went a combined 11-for-23 with nine RBI.
Carr notches her first multi-home run game of her career, and her five RBI in a game are a new career-high.
This marks the Pirates' second walk-off win of the season, the other being the 6-5 win over North Dakota back on March 4. In that game, the Pirates rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the victory.
Wingo's double in the seventh was the first walk-off hit of her career. Wingo now has hits in 22 of her last 24 games.
With the win, the Pirates surpass their win total from 2022.

How it Happened

Neither team found the scoreboard through the first three innings, however the Pirates had two opportunities with two runners on base but were unable to score.
The Broncs tallied the first run of the game in the fourth on an RBI groundout to second base.
The Pirates grabbed two in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. Wingo lined a ball to the wall in left center to score Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Hill to put The Hall in front.
In the sixth, Rider got a leadoff double from Burroughs who eventually worked her way over to third. Babik dug deep to get the final three outs, including a strikeout with the tying run 60 feet away, to dodge the threat.
In the bottom half of the sixth, the Pirates would grab some insurance. Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) stepped up with the bases loaded and hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it a 3-1 lead.

Notes & Numbers

The Pirates have won five straight games and improve to 14-2 over their last 16 games.
Hill extends her on-base streak to 18 games, while Wingo's on-base streak now stands at 17 games.
Babik has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of her last six outings.
