Pirates Outlast Lehigh in Extras to Split Doubleheader
4/7/2023 7:16:00 PM | Softball
Game One: Seton Hall 6, Lehigh 4 (11 innings)
How it Happened
- After Lehigh grabbed the lead in the first, Seton Hall was able to answer back quickly in the second. Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) opened the inning with a double and was pinch run for by Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.). After Arruda advanced to third on a wild pitch, Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) hit a sacrifice fly to center to knot things up at 1-1.
- The Mountain Hawks took the lead back in the third, but once again the Pirate bats were able to bring across the tying run next inning. After Wingo singled to right field, an errant throw to the plate allowed Lauren Caye (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to score to make it a 2-2 game.
- An RBI double in the bottom of the fifth put Lehigh back ahead, and the Pirates entered the seventh three outs from defeat. After Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) opened the inning with a double, pinch runner Taylor Soanes (Missouri City, Texas) would be thrown out at the plate after a Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) single to deny the Pirates the tying run.
- The Pirates would break through later in the inning, as Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) hit an opposite field single to score Amber Johnson (Belfair, Wash.) to level things at 3-3.
- Both sides had opportunities throughout extra innings, but it was in the 11th inning when the Pirates finally took the lead for the first time. Ashly Colonnetta (Cypress, Texas) hit a tapper back to the circle which brought in Gilbert to put The Hall ahead. Next, Hill would line a two-run double to left field which proved to be the game-winning hit.
- This was the Pirates' fourth extra-inning game of the season, picking up their first win in extra frames in 2023.
- Innings-wise, this was Seton Hall's longest game of the season.
- Smith got the victory in relief, pitching five innings and allowing just two hits and no earned runs.
- All nine batters in the Pirates' lineup recorded at least one base hit. For the second time in the last three games, the top six Pirate batters registered at least one hit.
How it Happened
- The Pirates struck early in game two. Wingo singled to open the second inning and worked her way around to third. With two outs, Wingo would come home to score on a wild pitch to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
- Sydney Babik (Gilbert, Ariz.) was strong early in her outing, allowing her only run in the fifth inning on an RBI double to left field.
- The Pirates would respond in each of the next two innings. In the sixth, Smith singled to left field to score Caye and give the Pirates the lead. In the seventh, Jenna Blevins (Flat Rock, Mich.) lined a double to right center to give The Hall some insurance.
- Lehigh would rally for three in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the win.
- Blevins collected two hits and an RBI in just her seventh game of the year and first since Feb. 26 against Army.
- Wingo went 1-for-3 to extend her on-base streak to 19 games.
- Hill's on-base streak of 19 straight games came to an end.
The Pirates conclude their weekend at Lehigh on Saturday afternoon with first pitch slated for noon.
