
Five Pirates Named CSC Academic All-District

South Orange, N.J. - Five members of the Seton Hall baseball team were named to College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District team; graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.), sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.), sophomore Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.), redshirt junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) and junior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.).
The All-District team recognizes the nation's top baseball student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. Athletes must have at least a 3.5 GPA. Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot. First-, second and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 7. Teams can only nominate up to five players and Seton Hall was one of only two teams in the BIG EAST that had five players qualify.
Clyde is having a career year in final year of eligibility as he has gone on to set career bests in hits (62), runs (35) and RBI (25). He leads the Pirates with 20 multi-hit games and hasn't made an error at first base in BIG EAST play. Clyde earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice and will earn a graduate business certificate this month.
D'Amico has played and started in 41 games this season. He ranks third on the team with 11 doubles to go along with three home runs and 27 RBI. D'Amico is studying finance.
Hernandez has split time between catcher and designated hitter this season where he's hitting .273 with three home runs and 25 RBI. His strikeout to walk ratio is 24 to 13. Behind the dish, he leads the Pirates and ranks third in the BIG EAST with 12 runners caught stealing. Hernandez is earning his bachelor's degree in management.
Luders is once again having a stellar season on and off the field for The Hall. Despite missing most of March with an injury, Luders returned in time for BIG EAST play where he's hitting .328 with two home runs and seven RBI to go along with a team-high four sacrifice hits against league competition. He leads the BIG EAST with 15 hit by pitches and he has struck out only eight times in 153 plate appearances. Luders is the vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and he's working towards a degree in psychology.
Sylvester has also turned in a career year offensively. He has already set new career highs with 27 hits, four home runs and 22 RBI. He also ranks second on the team with 12 doubles. Sylvester recently received the Petersheim Academic Presentation Award for his interdisciplinary poster presentation titled "Application of Machine Learning to Predict Shoulder Biomechanical Efficiency". He will earn his degree this month in biology.
