South Orange, N.J. – Kyra Kreuscher (Great River, N.Y.) tossed a complete game two-hit shutout as the Pirates captured the final game of their weekend series against Syracuse with a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened
Syracuse put one runner aboard in the top of the first, recording its first of two hits on the day with a one out single. Kreuscher was able to work out of any further trouble by inducing back-to-back ground ball outs.
The Seton Hall offense would threaten in the second inning as Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) walked and Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.) singled to open the inning. However, the Pirates would be kept off the board as a fielder's choice, a groundout and a strikeout got the Orange out of the jam.
The Hall would finally break through in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back walks to opened up the inning, and a single from Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) loaded the bases with one out. Caroline Hobbes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) ripped a 1-1 pitch back up the middle for an RBI single, scoring Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.) from third to give the Pirates the lead.
Kreuscher continued to dazzle in the circle, but ran into her most threatening situation in the fifth. A walk and an infield single gave Syracuse runners on second and third with just one out. Kreuscher got the next batter to line out to Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) at first base. With two outs, a line drive to left field looked as if it would get down and score a pair of runs to give Syracuse the lead. Instead, Brennan laid out and made a diving catch to keep the Orange scoreless.
From then on, Kreuscher set down six of the next seven batters she faced to complete the two-hit shutout.
