Queens, N.Y. – The Pirates put runners aboard in all but one inning but were unable to manufacture any runs in a 4-0 defeat to St. John's on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened
St. John's jumped out of the gates quickly, as run-scoring base hits from Amy Mallah and Anese Thompson gave the Red Storm a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The home side would tack on another in the second on another RBI single.
The Pirates mounted their first threat in the third inning. Amber Johnson (Belfair, Wash.) blooped a one-out single to center, followed by a walk from Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) to put runners at first and second. However, back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.
After the first two innings, Kreuscher began to dominate. The sophomore retired 12 straight Red Storm batters, setting down the side in order from the third through the sixth inning. Kreuscher struck out six batters over her six innings of work.
