South Orange, N.J. – Seven different Pirates recorded at least one hit while Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) pitched a gem in the circle as the Seton Hall softball team took down Providence, 8-3, on Friday afternoon. Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.) led the offensive punch, each recording three hits in the victory.
How it Happened
After the teams traded scoreless frames in the first and second, the Pirates came to life in the third to score four runs. Allen drove home the first tally with an opposite field RBI single which allowed Carr to score. Next, Howard drew a bases loaded walk to make it a 2-0 lead. The Pirates would go on score twice more in the inning on wild pitches to grow the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth, the Pirates widened their lead. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) grounded a single up the middle to bring in Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) and Amber Johnson (Belfair, Wash.).
Providence's bats would go to work in the sixth, and a two-run home run from Sofia Peterson cut into the deficit a bit. However, the Pirates would respond in the bottom half with two runs of their own. Perez would bring one run home on a sacrifice fly, followed by Caroline Hobbes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) reaching on an error which allowed Allen to come around from second.
The Friars would get a run in the seventh on an RBI single, however Carr was able to prevent any further damage to secure the game one victory.
