
Sun One off the Lead; Pirates Third after 36 Holes at Princeton

PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) is a remarkable 5-under-par and has lifted the Seton Hall men's golf team to a third-place standing after 36 holes of the Princeton Invitational on Saturday.

Sun tallied collected seven birdies and eight birdies in route to a 4-under-par, 67, in round one. In the afternoon, he had four more birdies to fuel a 1-under-par, 70. For the tournament, Sun is tied for second among 75 individual golfers with a 5-under-par, 67-70-137. With 18 holes remaining, he trails Howard's Gregory Odom, Jr. by only one strokes for the individual lead.

Sun now has 19 sub-par rounds for his career, which ties for eighth-most in Seton Hall history.

As a team, The Hall shot a 6-over-par, 290, in round one, but shaved a remarkable 11 strokes off that score in round two. The Pirates were 5-under-par with a 279 in the afternoon. For the tournament, they're in third place with a 1-over-par, 290-279-569. Howard leads the team field at 2-under-par, only three strokes head of Seton Hall. The Hall's lone BIG EAST competition, Georgetown, is in ninth place at 25-over-par.

Graduate student Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) and sophomore David Lally (Wicklow, Ireland) are also currently in the tournament's top-10, tied for ninth overall. Xie had two birdies and 14 pars to fuel an even-par, 71, in round one. In round two, he had four birdies to power a 1-under-par, 70. Lally had five birdies in the opening round, but also had two costly double-bogeys. He finished with a 2-over-par, 73. However, in round two, he shaved off five strokes, collecting six birdies and nine pars in route to a 3-under-par, 68.

Junior George Fricker (Woodbridge, England) had an uncharacteristic 8-over-par, 79, in round one, but bounced back to shave off eight strokes in round two. In the afternoon, he tallied four birdies and 10 pars for an even-par, 70. He's currently tied for 36th with an 8-over-par, 79-71-150.

Sophomore Jack Bosworth (Simsbury, Conn.) shot a 12-over-par, 82, in round two, but also improved mightily in the afternoon. In round two, he had three birdies and 13 pars on his way to a 1-over-par, 71. For the tournament, he's 11-over-par with an 82-71-153.

THE COURSE
Dating back to 1895, Springdale Golf Club is one of the oldest in New Jersey. Designed by Gerard Lambert and revised by William Flynn in 1926, the walkable course requires precision shot-making and has superior conditions and playability. The property, which was originally private farmland, was purchased by the Class of 1886 and gifted to Princeton University with the expectation of establishing one of the first courses in the region. The private club has a close relationship with the University, and counts many university professors, administrators and students among its members.  With a fine and experienced PGA staff, the club hosts numerous tournaments, collegiate matches, clinics and golf outings every year.Â

In addition to Seton Hall and host Princeton, the field features teams from Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Howard, Penn, Rider, Saint Joseph's, Temple and Yale. BIG EAST opponent Georgetown is also in the field.

The teams will play five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.

THE SCHEDULE
The field will play 36 continuous holes on Saturday and one final round on Sunday. Play begins with a tee times starting at 7:45 am on Saturday.  Sunday's final round will start with a shotgun at 10:00 a.m.Â
