Scottsdale, AZ. -- Sophomore AJ Soldra shined in his Seton Hall debut with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate including a three-run home run and four other hitters tallied multi-hit games but it wasn't enough as the Pirates dropped their season opener, 16-11, against San Diego State st the MLB Desert Invitational on Friday evening.
Aiden Robbins and Marco Ali both posted three-hit games for The Hall (0-1). Along with Soldra, Joey Calabretti and Kevin Milewski also slugged home runs.
How It Happened
The Pirates got the first run across as Robbins drove in Soldra with an RBI single. San Diego State evened the score in the second but Soldra responded with a three-run home run to right center that put the Pirates back in front, 4-1, in the second.
The Aztecs continued their offensive onslaught by scoring six unanswered runs to go ahead, 7-4, in the fourth inning. Milewski stopped the bleeding with a solo blast in the home half of the fourth that trimmed the Pirates deficit to two, 7-5. Despite a two-RBI base hit off the bat of Ali, an RBI base knock from Milewski and an RBI single from Brennan, San Diego State would not let up as it carried a 16-9 lead into the ninth inning.
The Pirates wouldn't go away quietly though as Soldra reached on a two-out single and Calabretti brought him home with a two-run home run. Despite getting the tying run in the on-deck circle, The Hall couldn't extend the game.
