Seton Hall Can't Hold On Late Against NJIT

South Orange, N.J. — Steven Svenson tossed four strong innings allowing just one hit, no runs and picking up five strikeouts in his first career start but the bullpen for the Seton Hall baseball team couldn't keep NJIT off the scoreboard late as the Highlanders defeated the Pirates, 9-6, on Tuesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
Aiden Robbins went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and Jimmy Brennan went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run. Both teams finished with 11 hits but NJIT was able to capitalize with runners on, going 7-for-16 in the victory.
How It Happened
Svenson retired six of the first seven NJIT batters he faced and the Seton Hall offense helped the cause with runs in the second and third innings. Ryan Frontera took advantage of a wild pitch in the second to come across with the game's first run before Robbins poked an RBI single through the right side into wide open space allowing Marco Ali to score all the way from first base.
With the Pirates leading 2-0, Svenson pieced together a workman-like 1-2-3 inning win the fourth, ending it with his fifth strikeout of the game. Seton Hall was also retired in order in the fourth and the Highlanders took advantage of a new pitcher in the top of the fifth with two runs that tied the score at 2-2. The Pirates answered in the bottom half as another RBI single from Robbins put The Hall back in front, 3-2.
The Pirates led 4-3 entering the eighth inning when the Highlanders put up a crooked number, pushing across four runs in the frame to take a 7-4 lead. NJIT would tack on two more runs in the top of the ninth to extend its advantage to 9-4. Despite a two-run home run from Brennan in the bottom of the ninth, the Pirates weren't able to extend the game.
Up Next
The Pirates will next travel to Stony Brook for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday at 2 p.m.
