Pirates Drop Series Opener Against Iona

South Orange, N.J. — The Seton Hall baseball team took an early 3-0 lead but Iona scored six runs over the third and fourth innings to take the lead and the Gaels wouldn't relent as the Pirates fell in the series opener, 12-7, on Friday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
Ryan Reich took the loss for the Pirates and Stephen Curry had a solid showing out of the bullpen where he was dinged for three runs but struck out three in three innings of work. Marco Ali finished with three RBI and Casey Cumiskey and Joey Calabretti posted multi-hit games. Aiden Robbins extended his hit streak to 14 games in with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
How It Happened
After Reich retired the side in the top of the first inning, AJ Soldra got the Pirates started with a triple lifted to left center field. Marco Ali was the next batter and he brought Soldra home on an RBI groundout that gave The Hall a 1-0 lead. Another scoreless frame tossed by Reich was followed by a two-run inning for The Hall. With Kevin Milewski at second base after hitting a lead-off double, Kreiger drove him in on a double of his own. Krieger would later score with two outs as Joey Calabretti's RBI single made it 3-0 Pirates.
Iona would answer however, pushing across two runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. An RBI single off the bat of Tommy Manzo in the bottom of the fourth scored Kreiger and cut Seton Hall's deficit to two, 6-4. Curry worked around trouble in the top of the fifth to keep the Gaels off the board and he was able to blank Iona again in the sixth. The Gaels couldn't be kept down for long though as they posted a crooked number in the top of the seventh with six runs to take a commanding 12-4 lead.
The Pirates wouldn't chip away at Iona's lead until the bottom of the ninth where a two-run single from Ali and an RBI base hit off the bat of Robbins made it 12-7.
