Aiden Robbins went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, Kevin Milewski drove in three runs and AJ Soldra had the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the seventh inning. Stephen Curry earned his third win of the season after tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts and Mason Christopher struck out two in the ninth for his first career save.
How It Happened
Â
Butler struck first in the top of the first inning with a two-run double and the Bulldogs were able to load the bases with just one out against starter Ryan Reich. He was helped out by his defense as a fly ball to center field was caught by Soldra, who then tossed a strike directly to Jimmy Brennan at home plate who applied the tag that completed the double play to end the inning.
Â
The Seton Hall offense picked Reich up in the home half of the first where Milewski singled in two runs that tied up the score at 2-2. Reich worked around trouble to toss scoreless frames in the second and third. Ford led off the bottom of the third with a single to left field and he went from first base to third on another base knock off the bat of Soldra. Milewski then stepped to the plate and lifted a fly ball deep to left center field that plated Justin Ford and gave the Pirates its first lead of the game, 3-2. Ferri extended the Pirates' lead to 4-2 with an RBI double that scored Soldra from second.
Â
Reich retired the side in order in the fourth and stranded three baserunners in the fifth that maintained Seton Hall's two-run lead. Jayson Torres relieved Reich in the top of the sixth and struck out the side in succession. After Butler scored two runs in the top of the seventh that tied the score at 4-4, Robbins led off the home half with his second double of the game. With one out, Soldra roped a double over the center fielder that scored Robbins easily and put The Hall back in front, 5-4.
Â
Curry, who came on to get the final outs of the seventh and kept the score tied, worked a one-two-three eighth inning. With one out in the bottom of the third, rain and lightning came into the air and it caused a delay that lasted an hour and a half. On the other side of the delay, the Pirates went down in order and Christopher came on looking to close the door. After striking out the first batter, Christopher allowed consecutive base hits before inducing a flyout and his second strikeout that closed the book on his first career save.
