Pirates Power Past Providence in Weather-Delayed Finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After a trio of multi-run innings and a weather delay, the Seton Hall softball team (22-16, 8-7 BIG EAST) defeated Providence (13-20, 7-7 BIG EAST), 6-5, in the final game of the Pirates' weekend series.
How It Happened
Back in the circle after Friday's unfortunate seventh-inning loss, Kelsey Carr returned with revenge in mind. Through two innings of play, Carr held the Friars to a lone baserunner as the two teams sat even at 0-0. Providence gained the first lead of the game, however, as bases-loaded RBI groundout put the home team in front 1-0 through three frames.

The Hall didn't stay down for long, however. In the top of the fourth, a pair of singles put two runners on for a red-hot Naya Martinez. Martinez doubled into right field, scoring Caroline Hobbes in the process, to make it a 1-1 game. Olivia Gilbert stepped up to bat next and ripped a double into centerfield, scoring both Martinez and Jessica Muniz to give Seton Hall its first lead of the day, 3-1.

In the fifth inning, as the rain began to fall, the Pirates took advantage of the slippery situation. Carr and Katey Brennan each scored on an passed ball and error, respectively, to extend The Hall's lead to 5-1. In the aftermath of that scoring run, with two outs, a rain delay went into effect in hopes that conditions would improve. After 25 minutes, the two sides returned to the field and the Friars retired the Pirates' batter to end the top half of the inning.

Carr, still performing well in the circle, ran into a momentary issue when a leadoff single came around to score to make it a 5-2 game. The graduate student quickly escaped the inning without any more damage, however, preserving The Hall's three-run lead.
As the game ticked over to the seventh inning, the Pirates' offense pressed to collect as many insurance runs as possible. After loading the bases, Martinez capped off her explosive weekend with a two-RBI single to extend The Hall's lead over the Friars to 7-2. An extra run would score on a double steal before the inning's end, giving The Hall an 8-2 lead to protect in the final half inning. Despite a pair of Friars reaching base, Carr didn't allow a run as the Pirates secured the 8-2 victory in the series finale.
