Pirates' Late Rally Falls Short in Doubleheader Sweep to St. John's

How it Happened
The bats on both sides made some early noise, with the Red Storm hitting three home runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. The Pirates got one back in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout from Aiden Dill, but St. John's was able to respond again in the second to regain a four-run lead. Seton Hall would inch closer in the bottom of the second again, as an RBI single from Shea Grady and a squeeze play executed by Tommy Manzo sliced the deficit in half, 5-3.
St. John's would pile on as the game wore on, eventually building a 13-3 edge at the end of the top of the seventh. From there, the Pirates began to chip away. In the eighth, a sacrifice fly from Frankie Scrivanic and another RBI single from Grady trimmed the lead to 13-5. In the ninth, walks were the bugaboo for St. John's as it allowed Seton Hall right back into the game.
Three straight walks loaded the bases for the Pirates, and a Magnus Krieger single made it a 13-6 game. Three more bases loaded walks brought the score to 13-9, and a Gabe Cavazzoni two-run single to right suddenly brought Seton Hall back within two. Joe Marini followed by tapping into a fielder's choice, bringing home Manzo and making it a one-run game. With the winning run on base, Ryan Frontera struck out swinging to end the ballgame.
In game two, the Pirates got out ahead quickly on a single to right by Krieger, allowing Frontera to come in to score. However, St. John's bats stayed alive as it scored five runs in the second and four runs in the third to grow a large lead early. Seton Hall got runs on a sacrifice fly from Manzo in the fifth and an RBI groundout from Grady in the seventh, but the Red Storm were able to keep the Pirate bats quiet en route to the win.

The Pirates remain home this Tuesday to host in-state rivals Rutgers at 4 p.m. at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium.
