Pat Pinkman joined the Pirates prior to the 2018 season as head coach Rob Sheppard’s assistant coach / pitching coach after serving in the same capacity for Fordham University.
In 2021, Pinkman and his pitching staff helped guide Seton Hall to 16 BIG EAST wins – its most since the 2013 season – and its 10th consecutive trip to the BIG EAST Championship. The Pirates finished with the second-lowest opponent's batting average (.234) in the BIG EAST and they racked up the third-most strikeouts in the conference with 364. Additionally, David Festa – who finished third in the BIG EAST with a 2.00 ERA and second with a .175 opponent's batting average – earned All-BIG EAST First Team accolades and Tyler Burnham was named second team All-BIG EAST under Pinkman's tutelage. Burnham also tossed The Hall's second no-hitter under Pinkman as he no-hit Georgetown in a 14 strikeout effort on May 2, 2021.
Pinkman made an immediate impact with the Pirates’ pitchers with Seton Hall going on to lead the conference in BIG EAST-only games with a microscopic 2.04 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 2018. With Pinkman’s guidance, Ricky DeVito was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and a Second Team All-American. Additionally, DeVito and pitchers Billy Layne, Jr., Matt Leon and Shane McCarthy were all named to All-BIG EAST Teams.
At Fordham, Pinkman was an assistant for head coach Kevin Leighton, who played at Seton Hall from 1998-01. In 2017, Fordham pitchers broke the team record for strikeouts with 414, led by First Team All-Atlantic 10 performer Jimmy Murphy and Reiss Knehr. They finished the season ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in strikeouts in the conference. Murphy was then drafted in the eighth round of the 2017 MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles. The season also marked the first time since 2011 that a Fordham player earned Freshman All-American status as pitcher Kyle Martin was honored by Baseball America and pitcher Alvin Melendez was honored by the NCBWA.
Prior to his time at Fordham, Pinkman spent a season at Marymount University in Virginia as their pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Before Marymount, he served as the pitching coach at Washington University in St. Louis on two separate occasions, 2012 & 2014. Between those two seasons, Pinkman returned to his alma mater at Virginia Tech to finish his degree in Sociology as a student assistant coach.
Pinkman served as vice president and lead instructor at the Pinkman Baseball Academy from 2002-11. While there, he mentored and instructed over 200 players that have played at the college, minor league, and MLB levels. He also assisted the national selection committee for the ABCA Pitching Coach of the Year and Tom House Teaching Professional of the Year awards.
A former standout at Virginia Tech, Pinkman was a 1998 Freshman All-American and named the Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year. He set freshman records for wins (seven), innings pitched (89), strikeouts (81), pickoffs (10) and complete games (seven). As a sophomore, he set an NCAA Division I record with 19 pickoffs and a sophomore record with nine complete games.
Pinkman played in the Cape Cod Baseball League in the summer of 1999, starting in the Cape Cod All-Star game and earning Cape Cod Pitcher of the Year honors.
