Baseball Falls in Pitchers' Duel

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior ace Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) pitched seven innings of one-run baseball, but Seton Hall fell at #1 North Carolina, 1-0, in the 2013 season opener on Friday.
Prosinski went seven innings, scattering just three hits, while striking out two and walking one, but he was overshadowed by Tar Heels starter Kent Emanuel, who pitched a complete-game shutout.
Junior Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached first base on a fielding error by North Carolina second baseman Landon Lassiter to start the game, but was picked off, and the Pirates went quietly in the first.
North Carolina (1-0) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Skye Bolt singled through the right side to lead off, and was moved to second on Brian Holberton's walk. Matt Roberts followed with a sacrifice bunt, which moved both runners in to scoring position with just one out. Prosinski buckled down and was able to get the next two batters out, but not before Chaz Frank delivered a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate the game's lone run.
Senior Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) delivered a one-out single up the middle in the top of the seventh, but later was caught stealing, which muted the Pirates' scoring threat.
In the top of the eighth inning, Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out by Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.). After John Beaubien (Livingston, N.J.) grounded out, Kalamar moved to third on a wild pitch, but ultimately, was stranded there.
Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) singled to lead off the ninth inning for Seton Hall and moved to second when Zack Granite reached first base on an error. Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.), last year's BIG EAST leader in sacrifice hits, successfully moved Selden and Granite into scoring position with just one out. But with the tying run just 90 feet away, Pappacio struck out and Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) grounded back to the pitcher to end the rally and the game.
Senior left-hander Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) pitched one inning of scoreless relief following Prosinski. He gave up one hit and struck out one.
Seton Hall will resume its three-game series with North Carolina on Saturday. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., but there is inclement weather in the forecast.
