NOTRE DAME, IND. – Senior Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) pitched seven innings as the Seton Hall baseball team edged #15 Notre Dame, 4-3, to open the BIG EAST portion of their schedule with a victory on Friday. Prosinski improves to 3-2 on the season. The Pirates’ ace pitched seven innings while giving up three earned runs, striking out five and not walking a single batter. The victory is Seton Hall’s fourth straight and takes some of the sting off their 2012 season-ending loss to Notre Dame at the BIG EAST Championship by the same score. Seton Hall (8-10) took an early lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) walked and advanced to third on a single by Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.). Selden scored the game’s first run on a wild pitch by Notre Dame starter Sean Fitzgerald. With his single, Kalamar’s on-base streak reached a season-long 18 games. In the third inning, the Pirates got all of the offense they would need. Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) walked to lead off and advanced to second when Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on a fielding error by Notre Dame’ s first baseman. A double steal moved both runners into scoring position, and with one out, Sullivan scored the Pirates’ second run on a ground out by Kalamar. With two outs, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) and Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.J.) delivered back-to-back RBI doubles to give Seton Hall a 4-0 advantage. Prosinski ran into some trouble in the bottom of the fifth, allowing three runs to score before getting Eric Jagielo, the BIG EAST’s home run leader, to fly out with the third out and strand the tying run in scoring position. Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) came in on relief of Prosinski in the eighth inning and promptly gave up a leadoff single to Mac Hudgins. But the sophomore right-hander buckled down and retired the heart of the Irish order, stranding Hudgins on first. Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.), having full embraced his new role as the Pirates’ closer, pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts for his second save of the season. Seton Hall will resume its three-game series at Notre Dame tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 p.m.
