NOTRE DAME, IND. – The Seton Hall baseball team dropped a second straight 3-2 decision at the hands of #15 Notre Dame in game two of Saturday’s double-header. The victory wins the series for the Fighting Irish, two games to one, and drops Seton Hall to 8-12 overall and 1-2 in BIG EAST Conference play. Seton Hall starter Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) took the hard-luck loss after pitching a strong game. The 6-foot-5 left-hander gave up just two earned runs over six innings, while striking out six and walking just one. Terhune ran into immediate trouble in the bottom of the first, but was able to strike out the side to prevent a big inning by the Irish. Instead, Trey Mancini’s RBI single gave Notre Dame an early 1-0 lead, and the Irish would leave two runners in scoring position. In the top of the fourth, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) delivered an RBI triple to left center to tie the game at one run apiece. The game would remain locked at one until Notre Dame struck for two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) intentionally walked the bases full with one out, and followed with a strike out of Trey Mancini. But with two outs, Notre Dame’s Ryan Bull reached on an infield single, scoring the go-ahead run. Zak Kutsulis then reached on a throwing error by Seton Hall’s Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.), which allowed the third Irish run to score. Lopez got the third out on strikes, stranding three Notre Dame runners. Trailing 3-1, the Pirates inched closer with a run in the top of the eighth. Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) led off with a double and Selden moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt. Sullivan scored on an RBI ground out by Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) to cut the Irish lead to 3-2. In the ninth, Grimm singled with one out, and Genovese’s ground out moved him to second. But the tying run was stranded there as Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) grounded out to short to end the game. Seton Hall only mustered four hits in the game. Kyle Grimm went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Pirates offensively. All three games in the series were decided by just one run. Seton Hall will return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 26 when they travel to Lafayette for a mid-week game. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
