SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) pitched 6.1 innings of two-run baseball, but it wasn’t enough as the Seton Hall baseball team fell in the series finale to Connecticut, 3-2, on Saturday. Despite the loss, the Pirates won the series, two games to one, and are now 3-3 in BIG EAST play. Terhune gave up only three hits, struck out five and walked four batters in a no decision. Seton Hall appeared to be on its way to a series sweep when it scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, sophomore Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) delivered a sacrifice fly to score Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) with the game’s first run. Then, UConn starter Carson Cross balked to score Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) and give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. But Cross would keep Seton Hall off the scoreboard for the rest of the game. The UConn right-hander improved to 6-0 with the victory. Connecticut (15-9, 3-3) cut the lead in half on a solo home run by Max McDowell in the top of the third inning and tied the score in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly. It was a frustrating afternoon for Seton Hall as the timely hit seemed to elude the Pirates late in the game. The Pirates got the leadoff man on base in each of the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but left him stranded in scoring position all three times. In the bottom of the seventh, Annunziata led off with a double down the left field line. Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) followed with a single up the middle, which advanced Annunziata to third with no outs. But Annunziata was thrown out at the plate on a fielder’s choice by Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.), Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) grounded out to short and pinch hitter Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) struck out to end the threat. In the eighth, Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) delivered a leadoff double down the right field line, but was later picked off. Granite singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was stranded there. In the ninth, Genovese was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Derek Jenkins (Allenhurst, N.J.) pinch ran and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kalamar. But Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) lined out to centerfield and Jon Beaubien (Livingston, N.J.) popped up to end the game. Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) took the hard-luck loss after pitching well in 2.2 innings. He gave up just two hits and the game-winning run. Seton Hall will return to action on Tuesday, April 2 for a mid-week game against in-state, non-conference rival Rider. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
