SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Starting pitcher Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) threw five innings of scoreless baseball, but it wasn't enough as the Seton Hall baseball team was edged, 2-1, at the University of San Diego on Wednesday.
Burum, making the first start of his collegiate career, scattered just two hits and walked only one batter. Sophomore Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) began the sixth inning in relief and gave up a leadoff single. He was immediately relieved by Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.), who struck out the first batter he faced, but then gave up a two-run home run to San Diego's Kris Bryant. Three additional Pirate relievers kept the Toreros scoreless for the rest of the game, but the damage had been done.
Offensively, Seton Hall had a runner in scoring position in four prior innings, but couldn't get him home until finally breaking through in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled, stole second, and scored the Pirates lone run on an RBI single by Genovese.
The Pirates almost rallied to tie the game in the ninth. With two outs, sophomore Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) singled up the middle, and Alex Falconi (Freeport, N.Y.) followed with single, which advanced the tying run to second, but the rally ultimately ended there when Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) made the final out.
As a team, Seton Hall belted out 10 hits, but left eight men on base. Grimm finished the day an impressive 4-for-4. Granite was 2-for-4 and scored the Pirates' lone run.
Seton Hall (0-9) will return to action this weekend when it wraps up its spring break road trip with a series in Malibu vs. Pepperdine. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET.
