HOUSTON, TEXAS – Senior Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) pitched eight innings of one-run baseball and the Seton Hall Baseball team pounded #24 Houston, 11-1, on Friday in Houston. The victory is the Pirates’ second over a ranked opponent this season (#15 Notre Dame). Prosinski went eight innings and gave up one run, scattering seven hits, with nine strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. More impressive is the fact that he was struck by a one-bounce, come-backer to start the third inning that hit him in the jaw. The game was stopped while Prosinski was attended to, but the Pirates’ ace remained in the game. Offensively, the Pirates exploded for 15 hits and were aided by five Houston errors. Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a stolen base. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) went 2-for-5 with a team-high three RBIs. Seton Hall got the bats working immediately. Granite reached on an infield single to start the game. Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) tried to sacrifice bunt him to second, but the bunt was perfect, and he was able to leg out a single as well. After Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) flew out to centerfield, Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) singled off the second baseman’s glove to score Granite with the first run of the game. Swinging on the first pitch, Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) laced a single into right field to score Selden and give SHU a 2-0 lead. Annunziata delivered the fifth single of the inning for Seton Hall, which drove in two more to give the Pirates a commanding 4-0 lead. Seton Hall could’ve added more, loading the bases with one out, but Houston made a pitching change and reliever Matt Hernandez was able to strand three Pirates. Houston got one back in the bottom of the second. Ashford Fulmer singled off the glove of a diving Papaccio with two outs and Justin Montemayor scored from second with the Cougars’ first run. Granite’s wheels helped manufacture another Seton Hall run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Granite laid down a bunt single and advanced to second on an errant throw by the second baseman. Granite stole third and scored on a slow grounder by Selden to extend the Pirates’ lead to 5-1. With the bases empty, Kalamar hit a hard single to center field. Papaccio hit a hard fly ball to right field, and Houston right fielder Ashford Fulmer had it lined up, but the ball was misplayed and rolled to the wall. Kalamar came all the way around from first to make the score, 6-1. Prosinski gave up a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth, but rebounded nicely to strikeout the side and strand the runner at third. In the eighth, Seton Hall exploded for five more runs to put the game out of reach. With the win, Prosinski improves to 5-2 on the season and lowers his ERA to 2.59. Seton Hall will resume its three-game series at Houston tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 pm ET.
