HOUSTON, TEXAS – A day after erupting for 11 runs and 15 hits, the Seton Hall baseball team was held scoreless in a 4-0 loss at #24 Houston on Saturday. Seton Hall starter Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) pitched well, but took the loss. He gave up four earned runs on just two hits over 5.2 innings with four strikeouts and three walks. Houston got to Lopez in the first inning before he was able settled in. An RBI double to deep left center by Frankie Ratcliff gave the Cougars their first lead of the series, 1-0. From there, Lopez found his groove. The right-hander held Houston hitless over the next four innings. The Pirates however, couldn’t capitalize offensively. Houston starting pitcher Austin Pruitt was rolling. The Cougar ace threw a complete-game shutout, while striking out 12 batters and walking none in a 142-pitch effort. Lopez was still cruising having struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth, but on the third strikeout, the ball got away on the third strike allowing Caleb Barker to reach first. A hit by pitch moved Barker to second and Jonathan Davis followed with a double off the third base bag, which scored Barker with the Cougars’ second run. Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) came in to relieve Lopez, but before recording the final out, he gave up a two-RBI single to Michael Pyeatt, which extended the Houston lead to 4-0. The Pirates out-hit Houston despite being out-scored, 4-0. Seton Hall had six hits, compared to five for the Cougars. Ryan Sullivan (Stony Point, N.Y.) was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He finished 2-for-3 including a double. Seton Hall will complete its three-game series at Houston with the rubber game tomorrow. First pitch for Sunday’s game has been moved up to 12:30 pm ET., due to a change in Seton Hall’s flight home.
