JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Seton Hall baseball team erupted for seven runs in the final two innings en route to a 13-5 victory at Saint Peter’s on Tuesday. The win is the sixth straight for the Pirates and the 10th in their last 11 games. Their 13 hit-attack marks the 18th time in the last 19 games that the Pirates have recorded at least nine hits. Senior Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) led the Pirates on Tuesday, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base. Seton Hall (27-16) got on the board early with a run in the top of the first inning. Junior Zack Granite (Staten Island, N.Y.) started the game with an infield single, moved to second when Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) walked, stole third and was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.). Saint Peter’s got the run back immediately when Seton Hall starter Anthony Elia (Flanders, N.J.) walked in a run in the bottom of the first. While Seton Hall scores most of their runs via “small ball,” it was the long ball that put the Pirates back in front. In the top of the second inning, Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) connected on his team-leading fifth home run of the season, a solo shot, to give The Hall a 2-1 lead. In the top of the third, Selden smoked his first home run of the season to deep left center, also a solo homer, to give Seton Hall a 3-1 advantage. The Pirates’ offense broke out for three runs in the top of the fifth. Mike Genovese (Livingston, N.J.) delivered an RBI single to score Kalamar. Annunziata followed with a sacrifice fly, which plated Papaccio and extend the Pirates’ lead to 5-1. Kyle Grimm (Bergenfield, N.J.) then lined a double into the left field corner, scoring Genovese from first with the Pirates’ sixth run. Trailing 6-1, the Peacocks mounted a rally with a run in the fifth and three runs in the seventh to cut the Seton Hall lead to 6-5. But the Pirates poured on the offense late. Seton Hall scored three times in the top of the eighth, thanks in large part to a two-out, two-RBI double by Papaccio to give the Pirates a 9-5 lead. In the top of the ninth, The Hall erupted for four more runs. Freshman Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) smacked a bases-clearing, three-RBI triple. After Granite’s RBI ground out, the Pirates held a commanding 13-5 lead. Elia earned the victory with five innings of two run baseball. He improves to 4-2 on the season. Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, May 3 when it heads to Cincinnati for the first of a three-game set with the Bearcats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
