SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall baseball team swept a double-header from #20 USF on Friday with a pair of one-run victories, 3-2 and 5-4, at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates have now won 11 straight games, the longest streak in the nation, and 15 of their last 16 games. The sweep guarantees a series win over USF, Seton Hall’s seventh straight series victory. Seton Hall (32-16, 15-5) edged the Bulls, 3-2, in a pitchers’ duel in game one. Senior Jon Prosinski (Skillman, N.J.) went 7.2 innings, while giving up just two earned runs and struck out four batters in a no decision. It’s the 10th straight win for Seton Hall when Prosinski starts. USF starter Jimmy Herget took the loss with 7.1 innings of three-run baseball. The game was scoreless through the first five innings before USF broke the tie with a run in the top of the sixth inning, but Seton Hall struck back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Sal Annunziata (Bronx, N.Y.) and Tyler Boyd (Succasunna, N.J.) opened the inning with back-to-back doubles to tie the game at one. Dillon Hamlin (Colts Neck, N.J.) sacrifice bunted Boyd to third, and Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) flew out to deep centerfield to score Boyd with a sacrifice fly. USF (32-18, 15-5) tied the game at two in the top of the eighth, but an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth by Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) scored the go-ahead run. Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) pitched the final four outs of the game to earn the victory. In game two, Seton Hall was the beneficiary of a few early USF defensive lapses. The Pirates exploded for four runs in the first inning, all unearned, to take a 4-0 lead. Seton Hall mustered just one hit in the inning, but it was fruitful, a one-out, two-RBI single by Annunziata. Meanwhile, Seton Hall starter Greg Terhune (Washington, N.J.) was masterful early, shutting out the Bulls over the first five innings. USF got two runs back in the top of the sixth, but both were unearned. After The Hall plated a fifth run on a wild pitch to take a 5-2 lead, USF finally tagged Terhune with an earned run in the top of the eighth, which chased the 6-foot-5 lefty with two outs. Sophomore Jose Lopez (Cranbury, N.J.) came on to record a strikeout to end the threat and preserve a 5-3 lead for Seton Hall. USF scored a fourth run in the top of the ninth to cut the Pirates lead to 5-4, and advanced the tying run to third, but Brian Gilbert was able to strand the runner and earn his third save of the season. Terhune, fresh off a complete-game performance last week at Cincinnati, pitched 7.2 innings, while giving up just one earned run and striking out four without a walk. He improved to 5-3 on the season with the victory. Seton Hall tallied just three hits in game two, but made the most of them. Annunziata went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The Pirates are now tied with USF and Pittsburgh for the most wins in the BIG EAST Conference. Seton Hall has two more losses at 15-5 than Pittsburgh (15-3). Seton Hall will look to complete the three-game sweep of USF on Saturday at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
