SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Josh Prevost (Belle Mead, N.J.) pitched 6.2 innings of two-run baseball as Seton Hall completed a three-game sweep of #20 USF with a 4-2 victory on Saturday. Seton Hall (33-16, 16-5) has now won 12 straight games, the longest win streak in the nation, and 16 of its last 17 games. The Pirates have also recorded their third straight BIG EAST weekend sweep. Prevost improves to 5-2 with the victory, but had to wait for the win. With Seton Hall leading, 4-2 with one out in the top of the eighth, a heavy band of storms rolled through South Orange, halting the game for 1:45. When the game resumed, Sam Burum (Robbinsville, N.J.) got the final two outs of the eighth, and closer Brian Gilbert (Toms River, N.J.) worked a perfect ninth for his fourth save of the season. Gilbert saw action in all three games vs. USF. The right-hander earned the victory with 1.1 innings of shutout baseball in game one of Friday’s double-header, and picked up the save with a scoreless ninth in the nightcap. The Pirates got on the board first with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Freshman Zack Weigel (Oak Park, Ill.) walked and scored from first on a double down the left field line by Scott Kalamar (Bethlehem, Pa.) to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead. USF tied the game in the top of the fourth and took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by James Ramsay in the top of the fifth, but the Pirates scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. Chris Selden (Allenhurst, N.J.) led off the fifth inning with a single and stole second with one out. Weigel singled to left field, advancing Selden to third, and moved to second on the throw. USF starter Joey Lovecchio then threw two straight wild pitches. The first scored Weigel and allowed Selden to advance to third. The second scored Selden with the go-ahead run and allowed Kalamar to reach first with a walk. Giuseppe Papaccio (Nutley, N.J.) followed with his 22nd double of the season to score Kalamar from first and extend the Pirates’ lead to 4-2. Papaccio’s double is the 54th of his career, a new Seton Hall record. Since starting the season with losses in its first nine games, Seton Hall has now won 33 of its last 40 games. The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday, May 14 for their final non-conference game of the season. Seton Hall will face Michigan at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. The game is a closed event, open only to invited family members of the student-athletes.
